If I was going to change people’s lives with pastries and other products, I still had (and have) a lot of work to do… but I’m up for it in a big way!
A few years ago, a certain video was trending on millennials by Simon Sinek. I followed through and got hooked to his content until I read his book, “Start With Why”.
(The book is amazing and if you haven’t read it yet, you should!)
I read Simon’s book and I had an epiphany. People don’t buy what you sell, but why you sell what you sell. So we started on the journey to understand our why.
What was our WHY?
What made us wake up as early as 4am and produce amazing treats on our feet till 5pm? What got us out of our bed and kept driving us even through the hard times of Corona? We had to understand why.
The funny thing is, even though we’d done so well by certain standards, we had to learn why we were on this journey. (Notice I said “why” not “what” – people buy your why, before they buy your what. Thanks Simon :).
I realized I had taken on a new challenge – and I still had some learning to do myself. I hate to admit it, but I was more than a little unrest, especially when people started referring to me as the “doughnut man”. I felt, and still feel, a little uncomfortable with that.
Usually we’ll just post on social media pictures of doughnuts and use tongue-twisting captions. Our focus was how good our doughnuts were, because they actually are. We don’t compromise on quality and excellence.
After reading Simon’s book and watching a few other videos of his on Youtube, coupled with podcasts on Apple’s way of selling, I was more convinced Dough Man was more than just doughnuts. There had to be something higher and better than just a box of sweet edible rings.
Our why is to energize entrepreneurs, busy professionals and tertiary students to lead rich, meaningful and fulfilled lives by helping them care for those they care about.
So, after several of hours of study, research, thinking, and helping others, we feel very confident that we can help life become more exciting, elevate people’s relationships and reduce the anxiety of showing their loved ones that they actually care; because most people actually do, they just don’t say it much.
I honestly feel like I’m living my life’s purpose right now!
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
I’d love to hear from you about this. Have you ever felt drawn to do something but didn’t do it out of fear? I bet most people have. Do you feel stressed when it comes to sending out the perfect gift or creating the perfect surprise element? Do you wonder how else you can lift someone’s day when they are down?
